🎖️ An Omaha veteran walked 50 miles for PTSD awareness
Ted Dickamore covered 50 miles from Lincoln to Omaha in about 22 hours, blisters and all. It was his third year finishing the 50 Mile March, which raises money for veterans living with PTSD. Organizers are working toward 22 small homes and a community center in Bellevue.

👕 Dundee Day's T-shirt guy is back for year 15
Tom Hoover teaches at Creighton Prep, but once a year he runs a booth called Camp Dundee. His six kids dreamed it up 15 years ago, and he has been printing shirts ever since. The 35th annual festival drew crowds Saturday with music, food and a party running until midnight.

💙 A teacher's former student is now his cancer doctor
Ken Schreiber spent decades coaching and leading at St. Albert in Council Bluffs. When he was diagnosed with nasal cancer, his oncologist turned out to be a student he once taught, Dr. Andrew Coughlin. In January, Schreiber hits five years cancer free.

🩺 Free health fair returns to North Omaha
Creighton medical students held their fourth annual Magis Clinic health fair, offering blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol screenings, EKGs, HIV testing and doctor visits at no cost. Volunteers also handed out food, clothing and haircuts. Students said the point is building trust and closing health gaps.

🥾 Omaha moms found their people on the trail
Mom Power Inc. teamed up with Hit These Trails for an outdoor Mom Power Hour at Standing Bear Lake. Founder Desree Coleman started the group after feeling alone in motherhood. Moms hiked, traded summer stories and built support networks. When mothers thrive, she says, families thrive.

Here’s the latest on Omaha’s restaurant scene - openings, moves, and what’s next.

  • Westroads Gyro looks to be filling the empty Subway spot on the second level of Westroads Mall, right next door to Raising Cane's. A City of Omaha building permit lists the incoming tenant as a fast-casual gyro spot. No word yet on when the doors open.

  • Betty Rae's threw a grand opening this past weekend, August 21-22, for its third Omaha shop at 17676 Welch Plaza. Franchisee Zach Molacek already runs locations at Pepperwood Village and on Center Street. The Kansas City based chain hand-makes all of its ice cream and keeps 26 core flavors on the board plus a rotating monthly special. 17676 Welch Plaza

  • Scooter's Coffee just landed on QSR Magazine's QSR 50 list for the first time ever, an annual ranking of the biggest quick-service chains in the country. The Omaha-based company placed eighth in the snack category and 50th overall, on the strength of $859 million in 2025 systemwide sales across 906 stores in 32 states. It also grew by a net 57 locations last year.

  • NYC Grocery is coming to the north 90th Street corridor, according to a remodel permit. At roughly 1,600 sq. ft. in a multi-tenant building just north of Enterprise Rent-A-Car, the concept sounds like it's going for the classic New York bodega vibe. 3205 North 90th Street

  • Plattfluss Brauhaus is opening a brewery right inside the German-American Society of Omaha, with the public grand opening set for October 16 and a members-only preview on October 3. The nonprofit operation will brew traditional German styles exclusively for the society. 3717 South 120th Street
