⛳ Golf tournament keeps Cpl. Daegan Page's memory alive
Nearly 400 golfers and more than 100 volunteers filled Lake Ridge Golf Course near Beaver Lake this weekend for the fifth annual Hero's Scramble honoring the Marine from the Omaha metro. Proceeds go to his foundation, which supports Gold Star families, service members and veterans.

🐕 Why your dog really needs that daily walk
Bored dogs bark, chew and dig — and the Nebraska Humane Society says a walk fixes a lot of it. Sniffing the neighborhood keeps a dog's mind busy, not just its legs. The shelter's free walk and dog fest is Sept. 27, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with vendors, demos and a beer garden.

🎓 UNO's newest officer has four legs
Meet Ares, the UNO Police Department's first crisis therapy K-9. He looks like other police dogs, but his job is comforting people rather than confronting them. Certified in Ohio last May, Ares spent a six-month pilot supporting patients and staff at Nebraska Medicine before joining campus.

🏘️ Neighbors map out fixes during Omaha's first Good Neighbor Week
About 20 north Omaha residents walked their streets with Mayor John Ewing Jr., flagging cracked pavement and hard-to-read signage during One Omaha's first Good Neighbor Week. Youth led much of it. The BFF Omaha Green Team joined in too — they've picked up litter every Sunday since 2020. The week runs through Sept. 26.

🏥 Clarkson College opens $15 million campus upgrade
Midtown's Clarkson College unveiled a $15 million upgrade Monday, adding a welcome center, new labs, modern classrooms and a courtyard. Leaders say the space will help train Nebraska's next wave of healthcare workers. Mayor John Ewing Jr. called the college an economic engine for the community.

🏭 Old Vinton Silos Becoming 233 New Apartments
The city approved $10.4 million in tax increment financing to help turn the old Vinton Silos at 3417 Vinton Street into new housing. Crews will tear down the decommissioned grain elevator, but the silos themselves and their foundations will become the base for four new buildings with 233 market rate apartments. It's a creative way to save a piece of Omaha's industrial history instead of starting from scratch.

🏗️ City Sells Downtown Land to Kiewit for $7.8 Million
Council approved selling city owned land near 16th and 17th Streets, between Mike Fahey and Cass Streets, to Builders District III LLC, a Kiewit Corporation affiliate, for $7.82 million. The sale clears more room for development in the growing Builders District, right next to Union Omaha's team store and the Noddle Companies building.

🏠 TIF Funds New Affordable Senior Apartments on Park Avenue
A new tax increment financing agreement will help pay for a four story senior living building going up at 1059 Park Avenue. Every unit will be an affordable one bedroom apartment, adding more housing options for older Omaha residents in a walkable part of town.

⚖️ City Settles $700K Claim, One Resident Speaks Out
Council approved a $700,000 settlement tied to an incident from this past June. Resident Doug Lane spoke against the deal during the public hearing, but council members voted to move forward anyway, closing out the legal matter.

🏡 Assisted Living Facility Clears the Way Near 168th and Grand
Land near 168th Street and Grand Avenue is being rezoned from agricultural to residential to make room for a new assisted living facility from Cedarhurst of Omaha. Council approved both the rezoning and the special use permit the project needs to break ground.

🐾 Humane Society Keeps Animal Control Contract Through 2029
The city signed a new three year deal with the Nebraska Humane Society to keep handling animal control, worth almost $6 million total across 2027 through 2029. It's the same longtime partner Omaha has relied on for years.

Council also approved new liquor licenses for Stephanie Moss Salon and Y&J Maru Sushi Korean Grill, signed off on several plats and subdivision agreements including Woodbrook Valley South and North Streams, confirmed new speed limits on Leavenworth Street, and heard a handful of bid rejection appeals from local contractors. Routine task order agreements, a rubbish and recycling contract with Papillion Sanitation Service, and a lease with the University of Nebraska Board of Regents also passed.
