♻️ Curbside composting rolls into Florence
Florence neighbors can now join Hillside Solutions' Curbside Composting Club. Weekly pickup starts at $25 a month, and the club already serves over 475 metro homes. Prefer to haul it yourself? Drop-off costs $10 a month, and new members get free soil.

🎬 Hollywood comes to the Old Market
An Omaha-raised director is filming a dark comedy around town, and SNL alum Chris Parnell is in the cast. The crew is shooting at Harold's Coffee, the Old Market and Homy Inn. The film is halfway done, and the team hopes to hit festivals next.

🥕 A farming family says goodbye after 30 years
Ed and Donna Welchert sold their last veggies at the Aksarben Village market, wrapping up a career that began with the market's 1994 opening. Wild weather, from scorching heat to 18 inches of rain, helped make the call. Their booth grew right alongside the community.

🧀 Cheese gets a cleaner makeover
A Wisconsin company spent about a decade creating a natural American cheese that still melts like the classic slice. Shoppers want cleaner labels, but diners like Rudy's Drive-In love that gooey stretch on burgers and chili dogs. It's a Midwest food story with a nostalgic twist.

🏅 Aksarben Foundation honors John Cook
The Aksarben Foundation named retired Husker volleyball coach John Cook its 2026 Most Honored Citizen at its ball in Omaha. The group praised how he built people and pride across 25 seasons, including four national titles.

RESTAURANT NEWS
What’s Cooking In Omaha’s Restaurant Scene 🍽️

Here’s the latest on Omaha’s restaurant scene - openings, moves, and what’s next.

  • Lisa's Radial Café just earned a nice bit of national love. The food-and-travel site Discovery Matt ranked it #17 on its list of the 30 best diners in the Midwest, and Lincoln's Hi-way Diner was the only other Nebraska spot to make the cut. You can grab a booth at 817 North 40th Street.

  • Taqueria El Rey is building its third Omaha spot in a former Burger King southeast of 114th and West Dodge Road. The Mexican restaurant already has locations in South Omaha and on South 84th Street, which opened in June 2025. Look for the new one at 11325 West Dodge Road.

  • Hutong Sushi Grill looks like it has closed for good after more than a decade in La Vista. Google Maps lists it as permanently closed and the phone number has been disconnected. It was at 7202 Giles Road.

  • Swig is getting ready to bring its dirty soda game to Nebraska, with construction underway in a former Starbucks southeast of 72nd and Dodge. This will be the Utah-based chain's first spot in the state, and its closest locations are currently in the Kansas City area. Find it at 219 South 72nd Street.

  • Foxy Sushi has shut down its original drive-thru location in west Omaha, which had been open since 2021. Don't panic, though, because you can still get your fix at its Old Market spot inside Brickway Brewery & Distillery, which opened in 2025. The closed location was at 18101 Chicago Street.

  • Winchester Bar & Grill is temporarily closed after floodwaters did a number on the building. Staff and volunteers have started cleaning up and rebuilding, but there's no word yet on when the doors will reopen. It's located at 7002 Q Street.

  • Base Kamp Coffee & Wine has opened a kiosk-style bar in the center court of Regency Shopping Mall, near Pottery Barn, Williams Sonoma, J.Crew and Borsheims. It pours craft coffee and wine, and there's another Base Kamp inside Nebraska Furniture Mart if you're over that way.

  • Jersey Mike's has a building permit to open a sub shop in a new retail strip at the northeast corner of 180th and West Maple Road. It'll join Kros Strain Brewing and Smoothie King there, and it'll be the seventh Jersey Mike's in the metro. The address is 17807 Manderson Street.
