🛹 The Bay skate park gives Omaha kids more than a place to ride
The Bay has run one of Nebraska's only indoor skate parks for over 15 years, but it offers way more than ramps. Kids there make videos, play music and build friendships. Sixth grader Rocky Blodgett says the space helped him find people who truly accept him.

👭 Two Omaha girls with the same rare surgery become best friends
Layne and Clara, both 6, met at Boys Town hospital last year while recovering from the same rare skull surgery. Their moms crossed paths at a coffee stand, and the girls bonded right away. Now their families plan checkups together so the two friends can keep seeing each other.

🎉 Sts. Peter and Paul festival celebrates 109 years in Omaha
One of Omaha's oldest parties is still going strong. Sts. Peter and Paul Parish held its 109th annual festival Sunday, drawing crowds from across the city. Started by Croatian founders, it still serves lamb sandwiches and sarma while welcoming foods and families from many cultures. Longtime members call it a joyful reunion.

🌳 South Omaha could get up to 300 new shade trees
A South Omaha neighborhood near 33rd and L may soon get hundreds of new trees, thanks to $363,000 in grants from Plant Nebraska, the USDA and UNL. Neighbors say the extra shade will make walks and runs more comfortable. For every old tree removed, the city plans to plant two.

🎡 Sarpy County Fair brings families together in Springfield
The Sarpy County Fair wrapped up Sunday in Springfield with funnel cakes, live music, a pedal pull and face painting. Families like the Swierczeks made it a yearly tradition, driving in from Omaha. Local vendors showed off their food, and organizers say nice weather made it one of their best years yet.

🎨 Gretna veterans and neighbors paint a mural to honor service
At American Legion Post 216 in Gretna, veterans and residents are painting a mural featuring an American flag and an eagle. Lead painter Richard Harrison says it's a way to thank those who served. Community members can help paint the flag, and the project should be done by mid-August.

What’s Cooking In Omaha’s Restaurant Scene 🍽️

Here’s the latest on Omaha’s restaurant scene - openings, moves, and what’s next.

  • Culinary Dropout is bringing its first Nebraska spot to Village Pointe on Wednesday, August 12, taking over the old Local Beer Patio & Kitchen space. The 8,100-square-foot restaurant seats 245 and serves lunch, dinner and drinks, with a design that's unique to each location. It's run by Fox Restaurant Concepts, which started the brand in Scottsdale and now has 16 spots across nine states. *Village Pointe Shopping Center*

  • Morelia Gourmet Paletas is setting up shop right next to Charles Schwab Field. Paletas are handcrafted Mexican-style frozen treats, kind of like popsicles but loaded with bold flavors, real ingredients and toppings you can customize. *1307 Cuming Street*

  • Brewsky's Food & Spirits changed its name to Forest's Game Time Pub & Grill this past Monday, August 3rd. Longtime general manager Kevin Forest, who's run the place for 27 years, bought the location as the previous owners retired. He's planning to add pizza down the road plus rotating monthly food-and-drink specials you won't find on the regular menu. *15350 Weir Street*

  • Osaka Steakhouse & Sushi Bar has opened a second location southwest of 180th & West Maple Road. Owners Amy Chen and Michael Zhu, who also run the original Osaka in La Vista, built out a 7,000-square-foot space with an expanded kitchen and hibachi dining. The menu mirrors what you'll find at the first location. *18118 Evans Street*

  • Frost Gelato is opening its very first Nebraska location at Village Pointe, right next to the future Culinary Dropout in the old Cold Stone Creamery space. The Tucson-based shop has eight locations nationwide, with the closest one currently in Phoenix. Look for it to open in spring 2027. *17305 Davenport Street*

  • Neveria El Buen Sabor has opened a second location in Ralston, adding to its original spot in the South Omaha Main Street Historic District. The Mexican ice cream parlor also serves up snacks and desserts. *5170 South 72nd Street*

  • Arby's is coming to the former Burger Detour building, which Panda, Inc. recently purchased just south of 183rd & West Maple Road. Burger Detour closed both of its locations a year ago, and Arby's already has 15 restaurants around the Omaha area. *18308 Evans Street*

  • Hyper Energy Bar has opened its third Omaha location in the Coventry development northwest of 204th & Harrison Street. The Iowa-based chain is known for handcrafted energy drinks, coffee and snacks, with other local spots near 180th & West Dodge and 180th & West Maple. A fourth location is also under construction in Gretna Landing. *6735 South 205th Street*

  • The Donkey Barn, a planned bar and grill, is working through the approval process after applying for a liquor license in Bellevue. The Bellevue City Council recently recommended approval to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission. *2902 Samson Way*

  • Flower Child opened its first Nebraska location at Regency Shopping Center on June 30 in a bright, purpose-built space between Fleming's and Whole Foods. This full-kitchen, fast-casual spot has you order at the counter, with a health-conscious menu that goes well beyond salads into bowls, wraps and made-from-scratch comfort food using seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. It's the second Fox Restaurant Concepts brand to land in Omaha, following North Italia, and the beer list even includes a local pour from Lucky Bucket Brewing in La Vista. *Regency Shopping Center*
