🌾 Nebraskans join movement to restore vanishing prairies
About 80% of America's original prairies are gone, but a growing movement is working to bring them back. From university campuses to riverbanks across the Great Plains, restoration volunteers are planting native grasses and harvesting seeds from rare surviving prairies. The work supports wildlife, sequesters carbon, and helps communities reconnect with the land.
💧 Nebraska groundwater levels declining across the state
A new University of Nebraska report found that 62% of the state's monitored wells showed declining water levels between spring 2024 and 2025. The Panhandle was hardest hit, with some wells losing up to 15 feet. With 98% of Nebraska currently in drought, researchers say next year's numbers could be even worse.
🌳 Midtown neighbors push for park at old reservoir site
Residents from six Omaha neighborhoods are petitioning to turn the aging Walnut Hill Reservoir site near 40th and Hamilton into a community park. Neighbors want splash parks, basketball courts, and maybe a community center — not apartments. MUD plans to demolish the old tanks and says it has no current plans to sell the land.

RESTAURANT NEWS
What’s Cooking In Omaha’s Restaurant Scene 🍽️
Omaha Chicken Co. has officially opened its doors in the North 24th Street Historic District, bringing "Midwest-style chicken" to the neighborhood. It's a locally focused concept that looks to be a welcome addition to the area. 2414 Patrick Avenue.
Red Door Woodfired Grill is getting closer to its Omaha debut, with construction now underway in the former Spirit World space in Aksarben Village. The Kansas City-based woodfire concept is targeting a second-quarter 2026 opening — and a Gretna location is also being built out northeast of 192nd & Highway 370. 6680 Center Street.
The Amazing Pizza Machine is celebrating a big one this month — 20 years in business! The Millard staple packs in a 75+ item buffet alongside go-karts, bumper cars, and a full slate of rides and attractions. 13955 S Plaza.
Anna's Place is on the move. The speakeasy cocktail bar, currently tucked inside Hotel Indigo at 18th & Dodge, is relocating to the Old Market this summer. The new space — the former Mouth of the South at 1111 Harney Street — will boost seating from 30 to 50 and even include a built-in waiting room. The eastern half of the space will become Sakura Ichiban Co.
Indian Creek Golf Course opened The Sand Room this past Monday, April 6th, on the lower level of its newly renovated clubhouse near 202nd & West Maple Road. The speakeasy-style lounge offers food, drinks, and golf simulators and is open to the public for walk-ins. A second concept called The Approach — a full-service restaurant on the upper level — is expected to follow in late April.
Werner Park is leveling up its ballpark food game this season. Grow Omaha food critic Chris Corey got an early taste at media day, sampling new additions like Hatch Chile mac-and-cheese, a two-foot wiener, and alligator meat on pita bread. Sounds like a good reason to catch a Storm Chasers game.
Penn Station East Coast Subs has new local ownership! Omaha entrepreneurs Josh and Courtney Kenney have acquired the metro area's Penn Station locations through their company, JCK Capital. The three spots at 168th & West Center, 80th & Dodge, and in Bellevue are staying open, with a potential fourth location in Gretna being explored.
Omaha Chef David Utterback of Yoshitomo and Ota is making Omaha proud on a national stage — he's been named a finalist for Best Chef: Midwest at the 2026 James Beard Awards for the second straight year. Winners will be announced June 15 in Chicago.
Heart Ministry Center is planning to bring a full-service grocery store to the 26th & Lake Street area, with the Omaha Planning Board recently approving the site. The 24,670 sq. ft. store will be built on 2.7 acres and is designed to improve fresh food access while creating employment opportunities for the people Heart Ministry serves.
The Breakfast Club is heading to Omaha, taking over the former Jones Bros. Cupcakes space in Aksarben Village. The Des Moines-based breakfast brand — with multiple Iowa locations — is already hiring local staff, so an opening appears to be on the near horizon. 2121 South 67th Street.
M&M Beef and Steak has launched a new food truck in the Blackstone District, parked outside Jay's Beer Garden and serving up cheesesteaks and Italian beef late into the night. The truck is locally owned by Brian Magarro and Joel Marsh (who also owns Noli's Pizzeria) and runs Thursday through Saturday from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. 3724 Farnam Street.
